Athens is still awesome in part II
These are the B-Side shots or should I say A-B-side? I read a famous photographer once saying that he is happy if he takes one good (to his liking) photo a year. Ok. Here are a few things I like about Athens:
-
The metro is free (well kind of, I guess the city doesn’t have money to repair the ticket checking machines? It is still possible to buy tickets, but it seemed as if no one did)
-
The Olympic stadium they built is awesome, even better than Barcelona’s effort on Mont Juic, sadly not really in use as well except for the occasional joggers and people going for walks
-
Street art/ murals, things are still a bit wilder here so it seems as if there is a lot of space for creativity. The city is quite rundown, so all the art definitely works to its benefit, at least the big murals. I enjoyed that it was mostly street art rather than graffiti (the big ones, graffiti can be found all over the place)
-
A good Souvlaki, who wouldn’t enjoy a quick Greek Kebab made by a sweaty man with hair everywhere except on the head
-
The southern greek islands, simple: go!
-
The Acropolis and Plaka area is the most touristy part of town so this is where the city actually is clean and tidy. It is nice to walk around the hills and parks, feeling medieval
-
To escape the dense city I visited the hills and parks a lot, good views and worth the climb
-
Its not as westernized yet, of course Mc D. and a few others are already there, but not as bad as in other parts of the world
-
Economic living, things are affordable
-
The weekly/triweekly/daily markets. Authentic, real food, real people
-
Athen’s beachfront Piareus
-
Athenians love a good protest mostly followed by an even better riot, what could be better than take part and experience democracy first hand. I shoot photos rather than rubber bullets.
